PRACTICE RESEARCH/PHOTOGRAPHY - LAYERED PHOTOGRAPHY

Image
As part of practice research for Superficial Thinking, I wanted to return back to my initial stimulus of layered photography and try it out with some of the images that you can see within the piece. I took two of the most recognisable positions from the piece and layered them with the opposite (first image) to represent the two starkly different sides of a self, and a slightly changed version (second image), to represent the slightly different layers of identity that can sometimes blend into one; the layers of a person filter over one another to create every person you know, and I wanted these images to be a representation of being able to see inside of a mind as we're trying to achieve with this choreography. These images will be on display in the reflection space as a representation of the piece.

MARKETING - POSTER/FLYER

Here are the final poster/flyer designs that we've sent to print.

PHOTOGRAPHY - COURTNEY PROGRAMME

Image
Today I went in and took some photos for Courtney's piece, Restricting Space: Navigating Movement, to put in the festival programme. It was really fun to play with props. We went with the top middle one.

PHOTOGRAPHY - Y1 LUCIA PIECE & Y2 GIULIA PIECE

Image
Today in our shared rehearsal we shared the pieces we'd been working on and I took some photos of the Year 1&2 lecturer pieces for the programme.  Y1 LucĂa: My personal favourite is the Splits one, but we went with the first as it gets the feminist messages of the piece across the best. Y2 Giulia: My personal favourite from these is the walking across the wall at the back, but we went for the last one.

PHOTOGRAPHY - SUPERFICIAL THINKING PROGRAMME

Image
Today I took photos of my piece for the Fuzion Festival programme, I took photos of the leaning sequence to get across this idea of the dancers supporting each other, as well as because these positions will be recognisable motifs throughout the piece. For the programme, I've gone with the third of these images as I've decided that it will be the starting position of the piece so it gets across the establishing shot.

STAGING/WIDER CONTRIBUTION - MARKETING COPY

" Superficial Thinking explores the duality of a person through internal and extern al percept ion; You the audience are an observer, seeing two sides of a mind from the outside. Through a contemporary dance duet, we invite you to perceive two sides of a self, and the interweaving relationship of their existence together. " I wanted this marketing copy to get across the general synopsis of the piece, but leave the narrative of the piece ambiguous to prompt audiences to think about how they're perceiving the dancers from an outside view but to be as uninfluenced by me and the marketing copy as possible. The name for the piece was something I went back and forth on for a while but I went for Superficial Thinking. Superficial means surface-level and I wanted to play with a name that references the layers of a self, Superficial Thinking is slightly ironic in the piece's exploration of multiple layers of the self beyond what you see on the surface, but also makes sense in ...

PHOTOGRAPHY - POSTER PHOTOGRAPHY (Y3 RESIDENCY)

Image
As part of the festival, I am working in the marketing department on the promo and copy team. Especially with my initial inspiration for my contribution stemming from a type of photography, I wanted to document the photos I took throughout the festival process in this learning journal as it's definitely pushed me to use photography as practice research later on in my creation process.

MARKETING - POSTER PHOTO EDITS

Image
For the poster, I used some of the images I took of the BA3 residency work and edited them in a way inspired by a type of printing called cyanotype printing. I learned how to turn the photos into negatives as you would to prep for physical cyanotype printing and then added a colour overlay in the Dance City cyan colour to create these images. I then edited out the logos on the clothes and they were ready for the front and back of the poster. Kloth, M. (2017) Preparing the cyanotype negative in Lightroom and Photoshop. 15 September.
