TECH REHEARSAL - 30/05/2024

I went into the tech rehearsal with these notes to tell Nick, Courtney and Deane, which we went through and put in place with a combination of music and visible cues. This went quite well and we were able to execute what I had envisioned with the tech on the rig.

I got some positive feedback from my tech team that all of the cues were understandable and digestible with very clear markers in either the music or in the choreography as the physical cues were consistent in happening and very obvious for them. The only cue that we had to go over was at the end of Tilly speeding up when she stopped, but I just had to show them that she does a double turn instead of a single, which Tilly will always consistently do, and after that it was fine.

We started then by doing a full run with the tech, which Lucía (and Aggie :) ) watched, which went really well for me, I felt like the tech brought the themes of the piece together and enhanced the build of tension throughout the piece. I really enjoyed the pulsing of the lights in and out with the second song, it really enhanced that idea of a heartbeat and it drove the pace of the movement through the dancers' journey and the tunnel of light on the diagonal made the directional choices very clear. There was a bit of a timing issue at the end of the first song as they went slower than usual and ran over into the second song but it didn't look too bad as they were exiting the diagonal and the lighting changed as they left which was also effective as it would be if it changed as they started the second song, this worked because Emily just started the walks with Tilly on her back at the pace of the second song as they would start her Train of Thought Duet. Lucía had one note about not pausing at the end of the second song, so we decided that if they did get there too early, then they could do some noticeable breaths before starting their solos.

We then had time for another run, so we decided to just do the last two songs as we did in the rehearsal before so Courtney and Deane could look out for the double turn, and they did hit the cue much more accurately and I felt like it had a lot more impact.

After this, I chatted with the dancers and told them that the piece was now theirs and passed on the choreographic ownership to them. This edition of the piece at this point in time is about the two of them and their relationship, so right now in this moment, it isn't my piece, it's theirs and I want them to just go out there, have fun and indulge in the moment.
