REHEARSAL 8 - 20/05/2024

before this session I redid my timeline so I went into the rehearsal with the plant to test what I had plotted out the music in the space. We were in studio 4 so I could get a good idea of where I wanted them to be at the start of each section, so we mainly focussed on the travels between sections.

Timeline before Rehearsal:

Due to Emily's injury, I didn't focus much on the qualities of breath that need to be added to the piece, and just went ahead with testing the structuring of the first two song as to avoid as much contact improv and back-involving movement as possible.

I videoed a test of the first song; I asked Tilly to do as much as possible but Emily to mark. It ended up taking less time than the song and with me pausing them before each section was meant to start, but with the full movement I think it's going to fit perfectly to the music. I was more concerned it would take more time than the music so it's a good outcome to have to slow some parts down. From rewatching videos, Tilly has sped up her solo since creating it, probably because we've done it so much and sped it up in the end section, so that can slow down to match 4 cycles to Emily's 2 cycles timing wise. I actually don't mind Tilly finishing her solo first though as it allows for a reset when Emily walks to her. Instead of doing her solo on the spot, Tilly moves it back to upstage right and Emily walks back to join her, so Tilly can also fill out the time by getting up off the floor.

Video of First Song Test:

I also gave Emily the prompt of being drawn back to Tilly like they're magnetised together after seperating for a bit, which I want to implement as a performance quality going further throughout the piece. This helps with what Lucia said about having an awareness of each other in the space both in the eyes and in kinesthetic awareness, I think bering magnetised together is a good visual aid that seems to be working for getting that connection across.

We then tested out my idea for the second song, moving from Emily's Train of Thought duet into their kneeling solos, Tilly moving up to her stood solo and Emily replicating it, into Tilly's Train of Thought duet. this took some negotiating on how many cycles of each kneeling solo the two of them do as well as the Tilly solo and replicating material as Emily's sequences are almost always longer. We ended up doing 2 cycles each of the kneeling solos, and while Emily is finishing her movement off, Tilly is starting the first of three stood solo cycles. Emily joins in on the second one and does 1 replicating cycle, then as she goes to do another cycle, Tilly catches her and they start Tilly's Train of Thought duet. We didn't get a video of this sequence but it flows quite nicely into each other and has an interweaving visual between levels, who is in front and behind, their individual qualities and the contrast of them between the different versions of Tilly's solo.

While I was jotting this down on the timeline, I asked Tilly to come up with a replication of Emily's solo as Emily did in the last rehearsal, focusing on how to make it more linear in dimensions. I also forgot to get a video of this but it will be implemented in the rest of the second song in our next rehearsal.
