REHEARSAL 6 - 07/05/2024

 Rehearsal 6 Plan:

  • Regular warm-up
  • Finish interweaving duets
  • Start the leaning section, create 8 more leans and choreograph from there
  • Try out choreographed bits in the bigger space,
  • Lights + photos of leaning bits
To start with this rehearsal, we finished the duets we made last week from the train of thought materials. We added a bit onto the end of both and I'm really happy and reassured that the contact/duet material will get their relationship across to the audience. I employed a few choreographic devices in making the material feel like a symbiotic relationship; unison to show that they are in sync/sharing a mind, contact to show their reliance on each other and how they need the other to operate efficiently/effectively, canon to have a rippling effect between them, differing levels and modifying each other's movements to show duality, and keeping their differing dynamics evident in the work. There are moments in each duet where the movement styles blend together to show their relationships and moments where it is evident that Tilly is moving sharp and linear and Emily is moving with contraction and weight.

The next thing I wanted to do was get started on what I'm calling the Leaning Section, which will continue on from the sequence of back rolls on a diagonal from upstage right to downstage left. From their position at the end of the rolls, they're on their knees with Tilly leaning her head on Emily's shoulder, so with that as a starting point, I asked them to create 10 more leaning positions that we can then bridge between.

Above are the leaning positions we came up with in the order we joined them together. I asked them to focus on breathing into each position and thinking about an idea of support. It took quite a while to get the initial positions which was slightly frustrating as I had planned it to be more of an independent task, but I ended up helping with ideas for a lot of them. However, as a team, we seem to work a lot more efficiently and creatively when doing tasks involving collaboration. So, in terms of creating movement what works for the piece, it was better to spend more time on it and it be visually what I'm looking for in getting the messages of the piece across.

We finally did a test of the speeding-up section at the end and properly set the amount of cycles each of them needed to do to build the tension. We added in an extra turn for Tilly before she collapsed on the floor. I plan on adding onto this with the idea of Emily dragging Tilly, helping her in doing her solo material, and moving between recognisable positions from the leaning section before collapsing with Tilly on her back.
